THEO
Theo,
I would be happy to ferry your airplane to you. I own a 172 here in Mississippi and probably the most practical way to deliver the Colt is for myself and another pilot fly both airplanes up there and return home in the 172. This would allow us flexibility to adjust the trip for weather or any unexpected things that come up.
I assume to Colt will burn about the same amount of fuel as the 145hp C172 which is just under 7 gallons per hour. A 950nm flight should take about 11-12 hours or so of flying (allowing for minimal deviations). That would put each plane using 80 gallons each and the return home at another 80 gallons. A total fuel burn of 240 gallons. Avgas is generally 5.00-6.00/gallon. This would put fuel cost (avg 5.50/gal) at $1320.00. I would agree to make the trip for the cost of fuel (could be a little more or less). This would allow me to cover fuel costs in both airplanes, including a test flight in your Colt at M72 (New Albany) prior to departure. I expect that we will spend the night in a hotel at some point on the way back. I would not expect you to cover that expense. I am just looking to cover the fuel costs and enjoy a trip up north!
I did some checking and an airline ticket from BTV to MEM costs around $600 depending on how far in advance it is purchased. The cost of the trip for just the Colt would be over $1000.00 anyway. By purchasing a ticket, it puts a timetable on the trip that may have to be modified. By flying a return plane along with the trip, it allows me to be more flexible on scheduling and dealing with any weather or other obstacles that come up.
I will be able to fly the Colt on a test flight Friday May 20th, weather permitting. I'm sure that the weather will be fine at some point Friday or Saturday.
If all checks out well, I can deliver the plane when you have finished the transaction with Mr Hancoock. I can assure that if Jack Kalemba says the plane is good, it's good. As a matter of fact, if Mr. Kalemba weren't involved in this transaction, I would have him look at the plane prior to flying it to Vermont.
If this is agreeable to you, just let me know when you would like the airplane delivered, and weather permitting, we will make the arrangements. I am an FAA Air Traffic Controller and we have a National Weather Service specialists that I can work with to find a good time so as to at least avoid major weather systems. As far as I can tell, that would be the only thing keeping us from making the trip within a few days of whenever you need.
Let me know what you decide and if I need to test fly the Colt later this week.
Sincerely,
Rod Childers
