Mont Tremblant International Airport (MTIA) in Canada has announced a C$4.5m expansion plan to develop additional infrastructure to accommodate increased air traffic volume.
The plan will include widening and repairing the main runway (originally a military runway), and expanding the airport terminal and the tarmac from 5,000m² to 25,000m² to cater for more passengers.
The airport will also add navigation equipment to assist in safe landing during bad weather conditions and a water runway that enables MTIA to offer services to destinations accessible only by floatplanes.
Provincial and federal governments, including Quebec's economic development, innovation and export trade department, are contributing a total of C$3.7m for the expansion plan.
MTIA general manager and owner Lariviere said that after completion of expansion projects, the airport will play vital role in the development of the tourist industry in the entire Mont Tremblant region.
The expansion will enable the airport to cater for large aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus 320.
