Notre bon vieux Bush ne sera pas content, car ses amis saoudiens ont commandé des Eurofighter Typhoons pour équiper leur aviation... Ça n'a pas dû se parler fort dans les partys cette année!

Les Anglais commencent à douter du F-35, avion qui devrait équipper leur deux prochains porte-avions (CVA-1 et CVA-2). Ils veulent une machine plus polyvalente et commencent à regarder vers une version navalisée du Typhoon. S'ils vont de l'avant, les USA perdront un partenaire important... Et si les USA cancellaient le F-35? Le Canada devrait donc remplacer les CF-18 par des F-18E/F ou des Typhoons!

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia is close to buying more combat aircraft from Britain, its defence minister said in remarks published on Wednesday, flagging a deal which one industry expert said may be worth 10 billion pounds.

"God willing, we hope to conclude in the near future a deal for modern planes with Britain," Prince Sultan bin Abdul-Aziz said after talks with visiting UK defence minister John Reid, according to the state-run Saudi Press Agency.

Sources close to the negotiations have said a deal is likely to involve Saudi Arabia buying at least 48 Eurofighter Typhoon jets, with an option to raise that to 72.

One senior source close to the situation told Reuters an agreement might be signed later in the day after Reid meets Saudi King Abdullah.

Saudi Arabia has a long history of buying arms from Britain dating back to the 1960s and usually paying in oil.

In 1985 the two countries signed the first of two Al Yamamah (The Dove) arms for oil deals. The second was signed in 1988 and ranked as the biggest UK export order in history, with requirements for Tornado fighter jets, Hawk trainer jets and helicopters and support services that was valued at over 20 billion pounds.

The prime contractor for Al Yamamah was BAE Systems and the British aerospace firm's shares rallied as much as 5 percent on Wednesday on hopes it would benefit from a new deal.

The multi-national Eurofighter consortium which makes Typhoon jets includes BAE, European aerospace group EADS and Italy's Finmeccanica.

BAE shares were up 5.2 percent at 365-3/4 pence at 1208 GMT, the biggest riser among FTSE-100 index stocks, after touching a 3-1/2 year high of 366-1/2p. EADS shares were up 1.8 percent at 32.79 euros in Paris, while Finmeccanica shares were up 1.1 percent at 15.97 euros.

Francis Tusa, editor of London-based newsletter Defence Analysis, said Typhoon jets had a unit cost price of about 65 million pounds and that including weapons, support, training and other extras a deal for 48 jets could total 6 billion pounds.

Including options, the deal could reach 10 billion pounds, he added.

Analysts at investment bank Morgan Stanley said the deal could be worth 7 billion to 8 billion pounds to BAE.

Officials at BAE in Riyadh and London declined to comment.

A spokeswoman for Britain's Ministry of Defence would say only that "negotiations are continuing."

Saudi sources said the kingdom was also considering buying Rafale jets from France's Dassault Aviation.

Je pense qu'avec les nouvelles sortes de guerres actuellement, avoir besoin de se poser à la verticale n'est plus vraiment un besoin.
Bravo que cet appareil puisse concurencer les bons vieux Harriers.
Les besoins d'aujourd'hui sont plutôt de pouvoir aller déposer une bombe dans la pièce où il y a un meeting de terroristes.
Et également tenter de trouver une solution aux I.E D. la plus grande force de destruction des soldats actuellement.
Les temps ont bien changer...

C'est un copain, compagnon de pêche au saumon, (et mari de Julie Payette) qui était pilote d'essai sur le Typhoon. Il m'avait d'ailleurs donné une casquette "Typhoon".
